About the Charity

What we do

The Chichester Harbour Trust was created 13 years ago in response to the various pressures that threaten the unspoilt beauty and tranquillity of the area and risk the loss of the important wildlife habitats that the harbour provides.

Despite its status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, for the most sensitive parts of the harbour ownership is the only sure form of stewardship, and it is the charity’s aim to acquire land in the most vulnerable areas to safeguard it for future generations.

The Trust now owns over 230 acres of harbourside land in 10 sites. Each site is important for the contribution it makes to the beauty of the landscape and the wildlife habitats of Chichester Harbour.

By acquiring these sites and, working closely with the Chichester Harbour Conservancy to ensure that they are properly managed, the Trust is playing a vital role in preserving the unique qualities of Chichester Harbour and its setting. The charity continues to seek opportunities to buy sensitive land within the harbour area while ensuring that the sites already in its care are properly looked after.

The Friends of Chichester Harbour

There are two main charities working for the preservation of Chichester Harbour, The Chichester Harbour Trust and The Friends of Chichester Harbour. The two act in harmony but have distinctly different objectives. In brief these are:

The Chichester Harbour Trust exists to conserve, protect and improve the natural beauty and wildlife of the area for the public benefit by acquiring land, sites and buildings within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its setting.

The Friends of Chichester Harbour provide weekly working parties of volunteers directed by Harbour Conservancy Rangers and fund conservation, amenity and education projects in cooperation with the Harbour Conservancy. Their website www.friendsch.org  gives further details.
